India's Golden Triangle fits into a week: two days in Delhi, the Taj Mahal at sunrise in Agra, Fatehpur Sikri and the Chand Baori stepwell on the road west, and two or three days in Jaipur. Plan around one rule: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays. Gay sex has been legal in India since 2018.
It is the classic first trip to India for good reason. The three cities sit a few hours apart, the monuments are among the greatest in the world, and the changes of scene, from Mughal Delhi to marble Agra to pink Jaipur, give the week a natural shape. What makes it hard is the logistics, the heat and the crowds, which is exactly where a well-planned route and a good local guide pay off.
This plan covers each day, the train and road times between the cities, 2026 ticket prices, what a local guide adds in each city, and how to book guides across several days. It was checked in October 2026. Our guides work in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, and several of them cover more than one of the three.
How to plan a Golden Triangle trip in 7 days
Seven days is the right length: enough to see the essentials of all three cities without spending every afternoon in a car. Start the week on a Saturday or Sunday, so that your Agra days fall between Monday and Thursday.
That one choice solves the two fixed constraints. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and the Gatimaan Express, the fastest train from Delhi to Agra, also does not run on Fridays. The Red Fort in Delhi closes on Mondays, so if you start on a Sunday, see it on Day 1.
Go between October and March, when days are warm and evenings cool. November is the worst month for air pollution in Delhi; February and early March usually have the best balance of weather and air. If you want more breathing room, add a day in Jaipur, the city most people wish they had longer in. Our guide to building a flexible city tour explains how to keep a day loose.
Days 1 and 2: Delhi

Spend two days in Delhi: one in Old Delhi and one in the Mughal and Sultanate monuments of the south. Foreign visitors pay ₹600 each for Humayun's Tomb, the Qutub Minar and the Red Fort in 2026.
- Day 1: Old Delhi in the morning, with the Red Fort and the lanes of Chandni Chowk, then lunch and an afternoon at Humayun's Tomb, the garden tomb that inspired the Taj Mahal.
- Day 2: the Qutub Minar in the morning, the Lodhi Garden in the late afternoon, and dinner somewhere good.
A Delhi guide earns their fee in Old Delhi: they find the stalls worth eating at, keep the touts away and get you through the Red Fort's crowds without losing an hour. If your Thursday falls in Delhi, a guide can also point you to Pink Thursday, the city's long-running weekly queer night. Our gay Delhi guide has the full picture of the city, its queer nights and where to stay.
Start the week with a Delhi local
Delhi's local guides are ID-checked before their profiles go live. Book 4, 6 or 8 hours, and plan both days in chat once your booking is confirmed.
Meet Delhi's local guidesDay 3: Delhi to Agra by train

Take the Gatimaan Express: it leaves Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin station at 8:10 AM and reaches Agra Cantt at 9:50, every day except Friday. Book through IRCTC or your hotel; by road the Yamuna Expressway takes three to four hours.
Spend the afternoon on the sights the Taj tour groups skip. Fees for foreign visitors are on the official Agra ticketing page:
- Agra Fort: ₹650, or ₹600 on the same day as the Taj. The Mughal emperors' red sandstone fortress on the river.
- Itimad-ud-Daulah: ₹310. A small marble tomb often called the Baby Taj, and the model for the real one.
- Mehtab Bagh: ₹300. The garden across the river, for the classic sunset view of the Taj.
Children under 15 enter all Agra monuments free. Stay near the Taj so the sunrise walk is short.
Day 4: The Taj Mahal at sunrise, then on to Jaipur

Be at the Taj Mahal when it opens, 30 minutes before sunrise. Foreign visitors pay ₹1,100, plus an optional ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum; buy tickets on the Archaeological Survey of India's e-ticket site the day before to skip the queue.
The official Taj site also runs night viewing on five nights around each full moon, from 8 PM to midnight in half-hour batches of up to 50 people. It is worth planning your week around if your dates allow.
After breakfast, drive west. With stops the day takes about seven to eight hours:
- Fatehpur Sikri (about 45 minutes from Agra, ₹610): Akbar's red sandstone capital, with its great mosque and palace courtyards.
- Abhaneri (about two hours on): the Chand Baori, a stepwell of 13 storeys built more than a thousand years ago, about 95 kilometres before Jaipur.
- Jaipur (about two hours more): arrive in time for dinner.

An Agra guide is the difference between seeing the Taj and understanding it: the story behind it, the detail of the inlay and the gardens, and where to stand for the photograph. They also deal with the touts at the gates, which in Agra is a real service.
See the Taj with someone who knows it
Agra's local guides are ID-checked before their profiles go live. Book a sunrise tour, and message your guide about timings once the booking is confirmed.
Meet Agra's local guidesDays 5 and 6: Jaipur

Give Jaipur two full days, and three if you can. The old walled city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Rajasthan government's composite ticket, ₹1,100 for foreign visitors and valid for two consecutive days, covers most of the main sights.
- Day 5: Amber Fort at opening, then back into the city for the Hawa Mahal and lunch. City Palace in the afternoon; it is not on the composite ticket and needs its own.
- Day 6: Jantar Mantar, the 18th-century astronomical observatory, in the morning; the Albert Hall Museum and the bazaars in the afternoon; Nahargarh Fort for sunset over the city.
Skip the elephant rides up to Amber Fort. Animal welfare groups have documented serious welfare problems and legal challenges over them; walk up or take a jeep instead. In the evening, Kitty Su, the queer nightlife brand behind Delhi's best-known club, also runs nights in Jaipur, at The LaLiT.
A Jaipur guide adds most at Amber Fort and in the old city: they know the order of the palace courtyards, the jewellers and block printers worth your time, and the commission shops to avoid. The composite ticket makes it easy to pace two days around what interests you.
Finish the week with a Jaipur local
Jaipur's local guides are ID-checked before their profiles go live. Book 4, 6 or 8 hours, and plan the old city in chat once your booking is confirmed.
Meet Jaipur's local guidesDay 7: Back to Delhi or home from Jaipur
The drive from Jaipur to Delhi takes four to five hours on the expressway, and a new link road is cutting that towards three; the Vande Bharat train between Ajmer and Delhi also stops at Jaipur. If your flight home allows it, fly out of Jaipur instead and give yourself a slow last morning.
Private guide or just a driver?
Book both: a car and driver to move between the cities, and a local guide in each one. The driver handles the roads; the guide handles the history, the crowds and the food, which is where most of the value of the trip lies.
On Rainbow Tour Guides there are ten different guides across Delhi, Agra and Jaipur as of October 2026, and three of them cover more than one city. You can book one guide for consecutive days or different guides in each city; multi-day tours explains how, choosing a tour duration helps you pick 4, 6 or 8 hours a day, and finding the right guide covers languages and specialties.
For the difference between a private guide and a group coach on this route, read private tours vs group tours. Drivers on a multi-day trip are usually tipped at the end; our guide to tipping a private tour guide has India's ranges, about ₹300 to ₹500 a day for a driver.
Is India safe for gay travelers on the Golden Triangle?
Yes, with discretion. Gay sex has been legal since the Supreme Court's Navtej Singh Johar judgment of 6 September 2018, though same-sex marriage is not recognised. The UK government's India advice notes that society is conservative and that public affection may attract unwanted attention, especially outside big cities.
On this route that means keeping affection for your hotel, which is the norm for every couple in Agra and much of Rajasthan. Two men sharing a room draw no comment in the big hotels, and The LaLiT, which has hotels in both Delhi and Jaipur, is known for its LGBTQ+ inclusion. The ILGA World Database has the legal detail.
Before you go
- Start on a Saturday or Sunday so the Taj and the Gatimaan Express both run on your Agra days.
- Book the Taj online the day before, for the first slot of the morning.
- Buy Jaipur's composite ticket for two days, and pay separately for City Palace.
- Book the Jaipur Literature Festival early if you want to go: the 2027 edition runs from 14 to 18 January.
- Watch the festivals: Diwali on 8 November 2026 and Holi on 22 March 2027 are spectacular and crowded.
A week on the Golden Triangle is a lot of history in a short time. Done at the right pace, with mornings for monuments, long lunches and a local in each city, it is also one of the most rewarding first trips to India you can take.

Frequently asked questions about the Golden Triangle
Is the Taj Mahal closed on Fridays?
Yes. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday and open on every other day from 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset. Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri and the other Agra monuments stay open on Fridays. The Gatimaan Express from Delhi also does not run on Fridays, so plan your Agra days for Monday to Thursday or the weekend.
How do I get from Delhi to Agra?
The fastest way is the Gatimaan Express, which leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 8:10 AM and reaches Agra Cantt at 9:50, every day except Friday. By car, the Yamuna Expressway takes three to four hours. A private car is the easiest way to continue from Agra to Jaipur, with stops at Fatehpur Sikri and Abhaneri.
How much does the Taj Mahal cost for foreigners in 2026?
₹1,100 for foreign visitors, including the archaeology and development-authority fees, plus an optional ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum. Children under 15 enter free. Tickets can be bought on the Archaeological Survey of India's e-ticket site. Night viewing runs on five nights around each full moon, in half-hour batches.
How many days do you need for the Golden Triangle?
Seven days is the right length: two in Delhi, one in Agra, a travel day to Jaipur with Fatehpur Sikri and the Abhaneri stepwell, two in Jaipur and a day to return. Six days is possible but rushed. With ten days you can add a slower day in Jaipur or a side trip.
Is India safe for gay travelers?
Broadly yes, with discretion. Gay sex has been legal since the Supreme Court's 2018 Navtej Singh Johar judgment, although same-sex marriage is not recognised. Society is conservative, and the UK government warns that public affection may attract unwanted attention. Keep affection private and choose welcoming hotels, such as The LaLiT in Delhi and Jaipur.
Do I need a private guide or just a driver?
Both work best together. A driver handles the long road days between cities; a local guide in each city explains the monuments, manages the crowds and touts, and finds the food. On Rainbow Tour Guides you can book one guide across consecutive days or a different guide in Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.
