The Ultimate Guide for Gay Travelers to Cairo (2026)

Cairo has no gay scene and police who prosecute gay men, and it is still one of the great cities of the world to visit. Here is how to see it well and quietly, checked October 2026.

Gay Cairo has no public scene: no gay bars, no Pride and no venues to recommend. Egypt has no law that names homosexuality, but police prosecute gay men for "debauchery" under Law No. 10 of 1961 and have used dating apps to entrap them. Gay travelers still visit for the pyramids, the museums and Islamic Cairo, discreetly.

This is a guide to that trip. Cairo is loud, enormous and generous, a city of honking traffic, call-to-prayer across rooftops and tea glasses on every pavement. Two men travelling together are an ordinary sight here, as friends; what draws attention is public affection, from anyone.

This guide covers what the law means for a visitor, sharing a hotel room, where to stay, the pyramids, the Grand Egyptian Museum, Islamic Cairo, how to get around and the habits that keep it calm. Everything below was checked in October 2026. For the sights, Cairo's local guides are ID-checked and bookable for 4, 6 or 8 hours, and there is also a guide based in Giza.

Is Egypt safe for gay travelers?

Yes, for visitors who keep their private life private, stay off dating apps and are careful what they post online. Gay travelers visit Egypt all the time; the risk is concentrated in apps, online content and public affection.

The law in one sentence: Egypt has no statute that names same-sex relations, but authorities prosecute gay men under the "debauchery" provisions of Law No. 10 of 1961 on combating prostitution, which the Human Dignity Trust says carries up to three years in prison. Only men are criminalised.

Enforcement is real. Human Rights Watch's 2023 report on digital targeting documented Egyptian security forces creating fake profiles on dating apps and social media to arrange meetings and arrest the men who turned up, and searching phones after arrest. The UK government's Egypt advice says there is little public acceptance of same-sex relationships, and that some travelers have been arrested and imprisoned for sharing sexual content online.

Australia's Smartraveller adds that sex outside marriage is illegal and to avoid public displays of affection. The US State Department and the ILGA World Database have their own summaries, and our guide to traveling to countries where being gay is illegal covers enforcement, phones and embassies in depth.

None of this needs to make the trip tense. Our post on travel safety without fear-based planning explains how to set a few habits and then stop thinking about them, and discretion and privacy for LGBTQ+ travelers explains what a guide sees about you on our platform.

In Cairo, two men travelling together are friends to everyone they meet. Let that be the whole story outside your hotel room.

Can a gay couple share a hotel room in Egypt?

Yes. Hotels in Cairo routinely host friends and colleagues of the same sex sharing a room, and two foreign men are not normally asked about their relationship. The simplest booking is a twin or a double in an international hotel, made under both names.

Some hotels assume separate beds for same-gender guests unless asked, so request what you want in writing when you book rather than at the desk. Keep the room private, as any guest would: the UK warns about hotel staff entering rooms, so use the do-not-disturb sign and the safe.

Where to stay in Cairo: Zamalek, Downtown or Giza

Stay in Zamalek for quiet streets and restaurants, Downtown for history and value, or Giza if the pyramids are your main reason to come. Cairo traffic is the deciding factor: every crossing of the city can take an hour.

  • Zamalek: a leafy island in the Nile with embassies, cafés, galleries and the best choice of restaurants. Central for most sights and the calmest base in the city.
  • Downtown and Garden City: the belle-époque streets around Tahrir Square, close to the Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo, with big river hotels and cheaper old ones.
  • Giza: hotels facing the plateau, such as Marriott Mena House, let you walk to the pyramids at opening. Everything else in Cairo is a long drive.

A split stay works well: two nights in Giza for the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then Zamalek for the rest.

Pyramids of Giza: tickets and the best time to go

Go at opening, 8 AM, before the heat and the coach groups. The Pyramids of Giza are part of the Memphis and its Necropolis World Heritage Site, which runs from Giza to Dahshur.

Tip: Card machines sell tickets at the plateau, so bring a bank card. Decide before you arrive whether you want to go inside, and buy that ticket first.

The general ticket, EGP 700, covers the plateau but none of the pyramid interiors. Going inside the Great Pyramid costs extra: the ministry's page has listed EGP 1,000, while 2026 ticket listings quote EGP 1,500, so check the price on the day. The passage is narrow, steep and hot, and the chambers inside are bare.

This is where a local guide earns their fee in Cairo. The plateau is famous for touts, and the UK government warns about scammers at tourist sites. A guide handles the camel and horse offers, knows where to stand for the photographs without a crowd, and gives the place its story, which you will not get from the signs.

Grand Egyptian Museum: how to plan your visit

Book the Grand Egyptian Museum, known as the GEM, for the afternoon of your pyramids day or a full day of its own. It held its opening ceremony on 1 November 2025, when the Tutankhamun Galleries opened with the boy king's complete burial treasure.

Your ticket covers the Tutankhamun Galleries, the main galleries, the Grand Hall and Grand Staircase, and Khufu's Boats Museum. It is big enough to need a plan: start with Tutankhamun while you are fresh, then the staircase, then pick two or three periods from the main galleries rather than trying to see everything.

Is the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square still worth it?

Yes, for a half day. The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square opened in 1902 and still holds treasures the GEM does not, among them the Narmer Palette, the burials of Yuya and Thuya, and the gold of the royal tombs at Tanis.

The old building is crowded with cases, which is its charm. Tutankhamun's treasure has moved to the GEM, and a guide is useful for finding the pieces that matter among everything that remains.

Islamic Cairo and Khan el-Khalili

Historic Cairo, the medieval city of mosques, madrasas and gates, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the part of Cairo most visitors underestimate. Give it a full morning on foot.

Start at the Al-Azhar Mosque, walk north along Al-Muizz Street past the Qalawun complex and the old caravanserais, and finish in Khan el-Khalili, the great bazaar, for mint tea and shopping. Bab Zuweila closes the loop to the south.

The lanes are easy to get lost in, prices start high, and shopkeepers are skilled. A guide sets the route, explains which buildings you can enter and when, and tells you what a fair price is before you start talking.

The park was built on what had been a rubbish mound for centuries, and it is now the best green space in Cairo, laid out on the pattern of historic Islamic gardens. It is also one of the few places in the old city where you can sit down in quiet.

Where to eat in Cairo

Eat koshary at least once: Egypt's national dish of rice, lentils, pasta, spiced tomato sauce and crisp onions. Abou Tarek, on Maarouf Street at the corner of Champollion Street Downtown, is the best-known place to try it.

For a sit-down Egyptian dinner, Abou El Sid on 26th of July Street in Zamalek is a long-running favourite for classic home-style dishes. Zamalek's cafés and restaurants are an easy setting for two men eating out, and alcohol is easiest to find in the big hotels.

Getting around Cairo

Use ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem: fares are fixed in the app, and you can share the trip with a friend. Cairo's traffic is the main thing to plan around, so group your sights by area and avoid crossing the city at rush hour.

Australia's Smartraveller notes that taxi and rideshare drivers have assaulted passengers, including foreigners, so sit in the back, check the plate matches the app, and share your live location. Cairo International Airport is about 25 km from Zamalek. Sphinx International Airport, west of Giza, has direct flights from several European cities and is the quickest arrival if you are staying near the pyramids.

A guide with a car for a full day takes most of the friction out of the city: no negotiating, no waiting at gates, and someone who knows which route is clear at which hour. Our guides work in Cairo and Giza, and scams and off-platform payments explains why to keep the booking itself on the platform.

Can you do a Nile cruise from Cairo?

Most Nile cruises sail between Luxor and Aswan in the south, so from Cairo you fly to Luxor or Aswan to join one. Book the cruise with a specialist operator; our guides are local guides for your days in Cairo and Giza, not cruise companies.

Check government advice before you go further afield. The UK advises against all travel to North Sinai and to within 20 km of the Libyan border, and Australia lists the road from Giza to the Bahariya and White Desert oases as an area to reconsider. Cairo, Giza, Luxor and Aswan are outside those zones.

Best time to visit Cairo

Late October to April is the best time to visit Cairo, with warm days and cool evenings; December to February is the most comfortable for the pyramids. From May to September the heat is fierce, and sightseeing has to be done in the early morning.

Plan around Ramadan, expected from about 8 February to 8 March 2027. Sites stay open with shorter hours, the pyramids typically closing earlier in the afternoon, and evenings become the busiest part of the day.

Before you go

  • Get your visa online. Apply on Egypt's official e-visa site, visa2egypt.gov.eg; 2026 listings put the single-entry tourist visa at $30. A visa on arrival is also available at Cairo airport.
  • Clean your phone. Delete dating apps and any photos you would not want a stranger to scroll through.
  • Dress modestly. Cover shoulders and knees, and more for mosques. Smartraveller describes dress standards as very conservative.
  • Carry a bank card and small notes. Major sites sell tickets by card; tips run on small Egyptian pound notes.
  • Tip as you go. Our guide to tipping a private tour guide has the Egypt ranges, from EGP 250 to 500 for a full private day.

Cairo asks a little more of a gay traveler than most cities, and repays it many times over. Keep the private things private, put a local beside you at the pyramids and in the old city, and it becomes one of the most extraordinary trips you will take. Frequently asked questions about gay Cairo

Is Egypt safe for gay travelers in 2026?

Broadly yes, for visitors who keep their private life private. No law names homosexuality, but men are prosecuted for "debauchery" under Law No. 10 of 1961, and police have used dating apps to entrap them. Avoid apps, do not post sexual content, and keep affection in your hotel room. Two men travelling together draw no attention.

Can a gay couple share a hotel room in Egypt?

Yes. Cairo's hotels routinely host friends and colleagues of the same sex sharing a room, and foreign guests are not asked for marriage certificates. Book a twin or double under both names and state your bed preference in writing when you book, since some hotels assume separate beds for same-gender guests.

Is it safe to use Grindr or other dating apps in Egypt?

No. Human Rights Watch documented Egyptian security forces using fake profiles on dating apps and social media to arrange meetings and arrest gay men, and extortion gangs using the same method. The safest choice is to delete dating apps before you arrive and not reinstall them while you are in Egypt.

How much are Giza pyramids tickets in 2026?

The plateau ticket costs EGP 700 for foreign adults and EGP 350 for students. It does not include the pyramid interiors: going inside the Great Pyramid is a separate ticket, listed at between EGP 1,000 and 1,500 depending on the source, so check on the day. The site opens daily at about 8 AM.

Is the Grand Egyptian Museum open?

Yes. The Grand Egyptian Museum held its opening ceremony on 1 November 2025, with the Tutankhamun Galleries. Its galleries open from 9 AM to 6 PM, and until 9 PM on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry an hour before closing. Foreign adults pay about EGP 1,450 in 2026, booked as a timed ticket online.

Where should I stay in Cairo?

Zamalek, an island in the Nile, is the calmest base, with the best restaurants and good access to most sights. Downtown is closer to the Egyptian Museum and Islamic Cairo, and Giza puts you next to the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. Many visitors split their stay between Giza and Zamalek.
