A two-week Southeast Asia itinerary can link Bangkok, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City by short flights: five days in Bangkok, four at the temples of Angkor and five in Saigon. Thailand has had marriage equality since January 2025; Cambodia and Vietnam allow same-sex relations but do not recognise same-sex couples.

It is the classic first trip to the region for good reason. Bangkok has Southeast Asia's biggest gay scene, Angkor is one of the wonders of the world, and Saigon has the food and the energy. Each is a short flight from the next, and each feels like a different country, which it is.

This plan covers each stop, the flights between them, the 2026 visa rules for UK, US and Australian travelers, the law in each country and what a local guide adds at every stop. It was checked in October 2026. Our guides work in Bangkok, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City, with others in Luang Prabang for the optional add-on.

How to plan two weeks in Southeast Asia

Two weeks is enough for three cities at a comfortable pace: five nights, four nights, five nights. Fly into Bangkok and out of Ho Chi Minh City on an open-jaw ticket so you never double back.

All three legs between the cities are flights. The overland route from Bangkok to Siem Reap used to be popular, but land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia have been suspended since fighting on the border in 2025, according to the UK's Cambodia warnings. Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and Thai AirAsia fly nonstop from Bangkok to Siem Reap, and Vietnam Airlines and Air Cambodia fly nonstop from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City.

Go between November and February, when all three cities are in their dry season and the heat is bearable. March to May is very hot; from about June to October the monsoon brings heavy afternoon rain, fewer visitors and greener countryside. Our guide to choosing a tour duration helps you match 4, 6 or 8 hours to the heat.

Visas for Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam in 2026

Each country has its own rules, and two changed recently. Check your own government's advice before you book; these are the rules for the three markets most of our readers come from.

  • Thailand: from 15 September 2026, UK, US and Australian visitors get up to 30 days visa-free for tourism, down from 60, according to the UK's Thailand entry page. Everyone must also complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card online within three days before arriving.
  • Cambodia: apply for an e-visa at least four days ahead on the government's site, linked from the UK's Cambodia entry page, or get a visa on arrival at the airport with a photo and US dollars.
  • Vietnam: UK citizens can visit visa-free for up to 45 days, per the UK's Vietnam entry page. US and Australian citizens need an e-visa, valid for up to 90 days, from the official portal at evisa.gov.vn; Vietnam's tourism board has an official guide to applying.

Use only the official government sites; look-alike agencies add their own fees.

Is Southeast Asia safe for gay travelers?

Yes, broadly, and this route crosses three different legal pictures. Thailand's Marriage Equality Act took effect on 23 January 2025, making it the first country in Southeast Asia to recognise same-sex marriage; the ILGA World Database has the detail.

Cambodia has never criminalised same-sex relations, but its Constitution bases marriage on "one husband and one wife", so there is no recognition. Vietnam's 2014 Law on Marriage and Family stopped banning same-sex weddings from 2015 but does not recognise them. In both, two men sharing a hotel room draw no comment, and public affection is uncommon for every couple.

Three countries, three legal pictures, one rule that works everywhere on this route: keep affection low-key in public and relax in the places built for it.

The risks are the ordinary ones: bag snatching from motorbikes in Saigon and Siem Reap, drink spiking in tourist bars, and taxi scams. Use Grab, carry your bag away from the road, and never leave a drink unattended. Australia's Smartraveller and the US State Department publish advice for each country.

Days 1 to 5: Bangkok

Give Bangkok five days: two for the temples and old town, one for Chinatown and the markets, one for a day trip, and one to recover from the nights. Our gay Bangkok guide has the bars, clubs, saunas and Pride dates in detail.

  1. Day 1: arrive, sleep, and an easy first evening on a Silom Soi 4 terrace.
  2. Day 2: the Grand Palace and Wat Pho in the morning, Wat Arun across the river in the afternoon.
  3. Day 3: Chinatown and the flower market, then a river ferry at sunset.
  4. Day 4: a day trip to the old capital of Ayutthaya, or a slow day by the pool.
  5. Day 5: a last market morning and a night out on Silom Soi 2.

A Bangkok guide makes the temple days work: the right gate, the dress code, the order that dodges the tour groups, and the boat across the river. In the evening, they can show you how Silom's night unfolds without the guesswork.

Optional: three nights in Luang Prabang

If you have more than two weeks, add Luang Prabang in Laos between Bangkok and Siem Reap. The Town of Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of temples and colonial houses on a peninsula where the Nam Khan meets the Mekong, and it is the slowest, gentlest stop you could add.

Bangkok Airways and Lao Airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok, in about two hours, and Lao Airlines has a few flights a week from Luang Prabang to Siem Reap, which makes the detour work. The UK's Laos advice says there are no legal restrictions on same-sex relations. Luang Prabang's local guides can explain the alms round, the temples and the waterfalls outside town.

Days 6 to 9: Siem Reap and Angkor

Fly to Siem Reap on Day 6 and give it four nights: three days at the temples and one to rest. Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport is about 45 km from town, so book a transfer or take the $8 shuttle bus.

The three-day Angkor Pass costs $62 in 2026 and can be used on any three days within a week; buy it only from Angkor Enterprise. Our gay Siem Reap guide covers the temple order, the gay bars and drag show, and the men-only resort.

A Siem Reap guide is the single best investment on this route. They set the order of the temples to stay ahead of the coach groups, time Angkor Wat for sunrise and Ta Prohm before the midday heat, and turn the carvings into stories.

Days 10 to 14: Ho Chi Minh City

Fly from Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City, about 50 minutes, and spend your last five days in Saigon. Our gay Ho Chi Minh City guide has the bars, drag nights and the 2025 address changes.

  1. Day 10: arrive, then a first evening of street food and a drink on Đề Thám.
  2. Day 11: the War Remnants Museum and the Independence Palace in the morning, the Central Post Office and the cathedral after lunch.
  3. Day 12: a full day in the Mekong Delta or at the Cu Chi Tunnels.
  4. Day 13: markets, a rooftop bar at sunset and a last big night out.
  5. Day 14: a slow breakfast and the flight home.

A Saigon guide adds most on a street-food walk, where the stalls have no English menus and the best ones move, and on the Mekong day, where a small private boat beats the big tourist launches. They also get you across the traffic without drama.

Gay Bangkok or gay Saigon: which nights to plan around?

Plan your biggest nights in Bangkok. Silom has dozens of gay bars, clubs, drag shows and saunas within a few streets, and it runs every night of the week. Saigon's scene is smaller and friendlier, a handful of bars in the old District 1, with drag and roaming parties on Fridays and Saturdays.

Siem Reap sits in between: Barcode's nightly drag show, a cocktail bar and a men-only resort with a sauna. If your dates are flexible, Bangkok Pride in late May and gCircuit at Songkran in April are the big events; both are in our Bangkok guide.

Booking guides across three countries

Book a different local guide in each city: guides on our platform work in their own city, and each booking is separate. A multi-day booking with the same guide works well in Siem Reap for the temple days; multi-day tours explains how one booking covers consecutive days.

Tipping differs in each country. Our guide to tipping a private tour guide has the ranges: tip in baht in Thailand, in US dollars in Cambodia (about $5 a person for a full day) and in dong in Vietnam (200,000 to 400,000 dong for a private full day). For a slower version of this route, our list of the best cities for gay travelers over 50 pairs Saigon with Siem Reap.

Before you go

  • Check the new Thai rule. From 15 September 2026 a visa-free stay is 30 days, which is plenty for this route but not for a longer trip.
  • Book an open-jaw ticket: into Bangkok, out of Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Carry three currencies: baht, small US dollar notes for Cambodia, and dong.
  • Cover shoulders and knees for the Grand Palace, Angkor Wat's upper level and Vietnam's temples.
  • Plan the heat: sightseeing at dawn, a long lunch, the city at night.

Two weeks on this route gives you three of Asia's great experiences, back to back: Bangkok's nights, Angkor's mornings and Saigon's streets. With a local in each, it feels less like a checklist and more like a journey.

Frequently asked questions about a Southeast Asia itinerary

Is two weeks enough for Bangkok, Siem Reap and Saigon?

Yes. Five days in Bangkok, four in Siem Reap and five in Ho Chi Minh City is a comfortable pace, with short flights between them. You will see the temples and old town of Bangkok, three days of Angkor, and Saigon with a Mekong Delta day. Adding Luang Prabang needs three more nights.

How do I get from Bangkok to Siem Reap?

Fly. Land border crossings between Thailand and Cambodia have been suspended since fighting on the border in 2025, according to UK government advice in October 2026. Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways and Thai AirAsia fly nonstop from Bangkok to Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, which is about 45 km from town.

Do I need a visa for Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam?

For Thailand, UK, US and Australian visitors get 30 days visa-free from 15 September 2026, plus a digital arrival card. Cambodia needs an e-visa or a visa on arrival. Vietnam lets UK citizens visit visa-free for 45 days; US and Australian citizens need an e-visa from the official portal.

Is Southeast Asia safe for gay travelers in 2026?

Broadly yes. Thailand has had marriage equality since 23 January 2025. Same-sex relations are legal in Cambodia and Vietnam, though neither recognises same-sex couples. Public affection is uncommon for all couples in the region. The main risks are bag snatching, drink spiking and taxi scams, not discrimination.

What is the best time to visit Southeast Asia?

November to February is the best time for this route, when Bangkok, Siem Reap and Ho Chi Minh City are all in their dry season and the heat is easier. March to May is very hot. The monsoon from about June to October brings heavy afternoon rain but fewer visitors and lower prices.

Is Luang Prabang worth adding?

Yes, if you have three more nights. Luang Prabang is a UNESCO-listed town of temples and colonial houses on the Mekong, the calmest stop in the region. Bangkok Airways and Lao Airlines fly nonstop from Bangkok, and Lao Airlines flies a few times a week on to Siem Reap. Laos has no laws against same-sex relations.
